Doctoral Student in Energy/Chemical/Environmental Engineering (DSII)

The Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII) at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) explores research questions that are directly relevant for industry and business. TUT hires the doctoral student to complete a four-year, company-sponsored dissertation project under the joint supervision of a TUT professor and a company representative.

DSII offers companies a new avenue for improving their competitive position and renewing their business. DSII builds bridges between academia and industry and provides companies with access to the latest research knowledge and the opportunity to address research questions that are the key to developing their business activities. DSII offers doctoral students a unique opportunity to undertake dissertation research, gain a thorough understanding of innovation methods, tackle real-world business challenges and expand their professional networks. DSII is now looking for:

Job description:

Energy production and use uses large quantity of primary energy sources. In scenarios on the mitigation of global warming efficient utilization of biomass plays an important role. Biomass is already widely studied on biomass firing and biofuels fields. Anyhow, holistic view of maximum potential of biomass is not yet established. In the future, the sustainability requirements will further increase.

New technology development is needed to combat the future challenges. First, the raw biomass handling takes care of efficient utilization of biomass and sets the quality of the feedstock to the acceptable limit by decreasing the share of inorganic and organic compounds. Secondly, the future energy plant efficiently converts the energy to suitable format, like energy carriers and energy products. Thirdly, the total emission and sustainability of the value chain is optimized to fulfill the tightest emission limits. This research will envision, model and evaluate the future bioenergy value chains in the circular economy. The technology that will maximize the environmental and economic sustainability of biomass utilization will be investigated and possibly finalized in test and pilot cases. Results indicate the maximum efficiency of the ultimate energy conversion.

The tasks of the Doctoral Student will comprise literature review, designing of the experiments, sample preparation and various sample treatments, data acquisition and theoretical analysis (including mathematical modelling), techno-economic analysis, life cycle analysis (carbon footprint), and dissemination of the results in scientific peer-reviewed journals, international conferences and doctoral networking events.

The work will be supervised by Professor Jukka Konttinen and TUT Industry Professor Tero Joronen, and lead at Valmet by Marko Palonen and Erkki Välimäki.

The Doctoral Student candidate must hold an applicable higher university degree in energy engineering, chemical engineering, or environmental engineering.

The Doctoral Student candidate must have an enquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while also being able to work in a team. A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is mandatory.

The tasks of all doctoral students will also include teaching duties that amount to approximately 5% of their annual working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.

We offer:

The position will be filled now for a fixed-term period of four (4) years. Appointment is expected to commence on 1 January 2019 or as mutually agreed.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff the position of a Doctoral Student is placed on the job demands levels 1-4. In addition, employees receive performance based salary. The typical starting salary for doctoral students on the University's payroll is approximately €2,440 per month. Trial period of six months applies for all new employees.
